The AWV Program offers preventive services to older adults and people with disabilities for them to stay healthy and live productive lives. Unfortunately, because this is a relatively new benefit, many patients with Medicare have not yet taken advantage of the services.
The focus on the AWV program is to promote wellness and save lives. Barriers to care such as co-pays and out-of-pocket expenses are eliminated under the AWV program. This free service is available to all eligible beneficiaries and has provided incentives for beneficiaries to assume control in their own care.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) describes a physical exam as studying the body to determine if there is or is not a physical problem. According to the NIH, AWV services usually include:
- Looking at the body (inspection)
- Feeling the body with fingers or hands (palpation)
- Listening to the body’s sounds (auscultation)
- Producing sounds, usually by tapping on areas of the body (percussion)
